Put a sweet spin on traditional conversation hearts with these Conversation Heart Cupcakes!
What you’ll need:
- Silicon heart mold (purchased from Amazon)
- 1 box of Funfetti cake mix
- 1 tub of vanilla whipped frosting
- 1 tub of strawberry whipped frosting
- 1 tube of red cake writing gel
- Offset spatulas
- Food coloring
- A cup of hot water (to help when you frost the cakes)

How to:
Step 1: Mix batter according to the cake box instructions. Spray heart mold with Pam and dust with all purpose flour to prevent sticking. Bake and let cool completely.

Step 2: Use a serrated knife to cut off the top (this will become the bottom of the cake).

Step 3: First layer of icing or the ‘crumb coat’ – Frost the cakes with vanilla icing to lock in the crumbs. It doesn’t have to be perfect because you will ice with colored frosting on top of this layer. Tip: for best results use room temperature icing and have a cup of hot water handy to continuously dip your off-set spatula in and wipe clean with a paper towel. This will help keep the icing on your Conversation Heart Cupcakes smooth.

Step 4: Refrigerate all of the pre-iced Conversation Heart Cupcakes for at least 4 hours (overnight if possible).
Step 5: Mix icing colors with food coloring to match the colors of conversation hearts. I used strawberry icing for the pink hearts and as a base to make purple by adding one drop of blue food coloring. I used the vanilla icing mixed with one drop of food coloring for the rest of the colors.

Step 6: Ice the heart cakes with each icing color. Use the same previous method (a hot cup of water and a paper towel to keep the off set spatula clean and warm.

Refrigerate the cakes for a few hours or overnight if possible before decorating.
Step 7: Decorate each of your Conversation Heart Cupcakes (using the red gel) with a fun conversation heart saying and a use toothpick to help keep the writing clean.

Serve up your Conversation Heart Cupcakes for a special Valentine’s Day treat!
