My girls love all things mermaids so I decided to make a Fun Boho Mermaid Shoebox Craft using materials laying around the house! It was fun and easy and my girls enjoyed watching the fish and mermaid wobble in the box!
What You’ll Need:
- Shoe box
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Glue gun
- Fishing wire
- Pencil, colored pencils
- Markers
- Mermaid cookie cutter (optional)
- Paper flowers found at Michael’s stores (optional)
Step 1: Cut out your first layer of paper that’s going to cover the entire inside of the shoebox. I used two sheets of pink paper to cut and fit the box and used a glue stick to hold it together.

Step 2: Draw and cut out all the layers of fun coral reefs to add depth into your water scene. I cut out a few different colored papers and also used patterned paper to give more interest into the scene. You can use any type of paper with fun textures or patterns to create a wonderful underwater look.

Step 3: I took my shapes and folded the bottom part to glue and assemble onto the shoebox. This makes the paper stand up right to show the underwater scene. Adding each layer of paper in the box, I made sure to press down on the bottoms to make sure it’s secure.
Step 4: For the foreground you can get creative with adding the details. I drew and cut the seaweed shape on paper for the front layer and added these paper flowers from at Michaels stores that resembled seaweed.

Step 5: After I assembled the foreground I took my mermaid cookie cutter and traced it to make a mermaid. I began to use markers and colored pencils to color the mermaid in. With the extra pattern paper that I had I then free hand drew some fishes to put into the star scene.

Step 6: I hot glued fishing wire onto the back of the fish and mermaid and on to the top of the shoe box.
And there you have it! An adorable Fun Boho Mermaid Shoebox Craft for your kids to enjoy!
